Top Plastic Surgeon: "This Is The Biggest Mistake Women Over 50 With Belly Fat Can Make"

I've done over 800 liposuctions. When my little sister asked me for one, I told her no. 3 weeks later, she sent me this.

I've done more than 800 liposuctions. On consultation #811, I told the patient not to have one.

I'd never done that before.

The patient was my sister.

She didn't even take her coat off, just sat down, pulled her top up and tried to pinch her stomach to show me what she wanted gone.

She couldn't. It was too hard to grab hold of.

"See?" she said. "It's like a rock. Just take it out. I'm done."

What's been going on with her

My sister was always the one with the hips.

Small waist, curvy, the kind of shape that looks good in a wrap dress.

Somewhere around 49, that flipped.

Her hips stayed the same, and her waist just disappeared.

And she hadn't really put on weight.

She's within a few pounds of what she weighed at 40. She just doesn't fit anything she wore at 40.

These days it's high-waisted leggings and a long top that comes down over her hips, pretty much every day.

She's got a whole drawer of those tops.

Last month she ordered 3 more online, tried them on in front of the bathroom mirror, turned sideways, and sent all 3 back.

"I looked 5 months pregnant," she told me. "In every single one."

It's the small things that get to her.

When she sits down, her stomach folds over her waistband. She's fine when she wakes up, but by about 4 in the afternoon, the top of her leggings has rolled down underneath it.

And in family photos, she's always the one taking the picture now because she avoids being in pictures.

She'd done everything she was told

What really gets me is that my sister isn't lazy about any of this.

  • She walks every morning with her neighbour and does Pilates on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • She loves wine and hasn't had a glass in 2 years.
  • She's done keto and intermittent fasting, and she's logged every single thing she's eaten in an app.

The weight came off her face and her arms. Her stomach didn't budge.

Her doctor told her to eat less and move more.

She said she already was, and the doctor said, "Well then, that's just what happens at this age."

Her menopause specialist put her on HRT. She sleeps better now and the hot flashes have stopped. "And it did absolutely nothing for this," she said, pointing at her stomach.

She'd even done CoolSculpting. 2 sessions costing $4,000, and she honestly couldn't tell you which side they did.

She had some website for Ozempic open on her phone when she walked in.

So she came to me.

I'm the one in our family everyone calls with a medical question.

I've done this operation more than 800 times.

And sitting across from my own sister, all I had to offer her was a scalpel, and I already knew it wouldn't fix what she was describing.

If a lot of that sounds like you, you're sitting where my sister was sitting.

And you're probably about to make the same mistake she nearly did.

Why I said no

The bit she couldn't pinch is the whole reason.

Liposuction takes out the soft fat just under your skin, the kind you can grab.

That's all a cannula can reach.

The hard fat my sister couldn't get hold of sits deeper, under the muscle.

I can't get to that, and no surgeon can.

So I could have taken out the little bit of soft fat on top, and she'd have gone home with a $6,000 bill, 6 weeks off her feet, drains in for a week, and pretty much the same stomach.

Even if it had helped for a while, surgery does nothing about why her body was putting fat there in the first place.

I've had hundreds of women come in for their one-year check-up with the belly back, and some of them have a scar across it now too.

I wasn't doing that to my sister.

But I didn't have anything better to give her, either.

So why is it all going to your stomach?

Nobody had ever explained this to her.

When your estrogen drops, your body changes where it stores fat.

Before, it went to your hips and thighs.

After, it goes to your middle.

You don't have to gain anything for that to happen.

It just moves.

That's exactly what happened to my sister. She had the same weight and hips, but her waist was gone.

It's also why the dieting didn't work.

When you cut calories, your body takes the weight from everywhere, and your stomach is the last place that'll let go of it.

So her face got thinner and her belly stayed.

She wasn't doing anything wrong.

She was following advice for the body she had at 35.

And why it's worse by the afternoon

That deeper fat is inflamed, and inflamed fat holds on to fluid.

It works a bit like a sponge.

Overnight, lying down, it drains. Through the day it fills back up, and by the afternoon it's pushing your stomach out.

That's why she was fine in the morning and back by 4 o'clock. It isn't something she ate. It's the fat itself swelling.

So everything my sister told me came from the same change:

Her waist disappearing while her hips stayed the same: the fat moved to her middle.

"It's like a rock": that's the deep fat, under the muscle, where nobody can pinch it.

Fine when she woke up, leggings rolled down by 4: that fat is inflamed, and it swells through the day.

Why nothing she tried worked

Once you know that, every failed attempt makes sense.

Dieting takes weight from everywhere else first. Her face got thinner. Her belly didn't.

Walking and Pilates build the muscle in front of that fat. They don't touch the fat itself.

Spanx squash it flat for a few hours. It's back the second they come off.

HRT helped her sleep and her hot flashes. It didn't shift the fat that had already moved.

CoolSculpting freezes the soft fat you can pinch. Hers couldn't be pinched.

Liposuction has the same problem. It only reaches what you can grab.

What it takes to fix it

So if you want this to change, whatever you use has to do 3 things.

1 - It has to work on your belly directly. nything that works on your whole body takes fat from everywhere else first.

2- It has to reach the deep fat, not just the soft bit you can pinch.

3- It has to calm the swelling down, so it stops filling back up every afternoon.

Nothing she'd tried did all 3. Most didn't do any of them.

The patient who came back

About a year before my sister walked in, a woman I'd operated on came back for her follow-up.

I'd done her liposuction 18 months earlier, and I was expecting what I usually see by then: the belly creeping back.

It wasn't. It was smaller than the day she'd left my clinic.

I asked what she'd been doing. She looked a bit embarrassed and said her daughter had bought her a red light belt, and she'd been wearing it every night in front of the TV.

I nodded and wrote it down, and I thought it was nonsense.

So I measured her. Then I went looking for the research, fully expecting to find nothing.

What I found when I went looking

It came from my own field.

Back in 2002, a group of plastic surgeons studying laser liposuction put fat tissue under an electron microscope after shining red light on it.[1]

After 6 minutes, the fat cells had opened up tiny pores and let almost everything inside them out, without the cells being damaged.

Then there were the trials.

In one randomised study, people treated with red light lost 3.5 inches combined off their waist, hips and thighs, compared with a group using a device that was switched off.[2]

More studies found the same kind of thing,[3] and the FDA has cleared red light devices for reducing waist size.[4]

I'd assumed it was fringe, but it was in the same journals I read every month. Clinics were already charging $150 to $250 a session for it.

And it did all 3 things my sister needed:

1 - It works on whatever it's shining on, so it goes straight at your belly.

2 - The near-infrared light reaches the deep fat.

3 - It calms the inflammation down, which is what stops the afternoon swelling.

When I told my sister, she laughed at me

"You've done 800 liposuctions, and you want me to buy a light off the internet?"

She'd seen the ads. Everybody has. Most of them are ridiculous, and I told her so.

Then I told her about my patient, and showed her the studies.

"Try it for 2 months," I said. "If it doesn't work, I'll do the surgery myself."

The hard part was finding one she could use at home

The clinic machines work because they're powerful and they sit right against your skin.

Most of the home belts I looked at got at least one of 3 things wrong.

1. One type of light. Red only, which works on the skin and nothing underneath.

2. Not enough lights. 50 or 60 chips spread across a pad, so most of your stomach gets nothing.

3. A flat pad that doesn't wrap round. It sits on the front and misses your sides, and a panel across the room misses everything.

That's why so many women buy one, see nothing, and decide the whole thing's a scam. Most of the time, they're right about the one they bought.

The one I gave my sister

It's called LumaLean, and it was the only one I found with both lights in every single LED.

There are 450 chips, with 2 red at 660nm and 1 near-infrared at 850nm in each light, and it wraps all the way round your middle.

The red light works near the surface and firms up the skin, so as your stomach comes down, the skin tightens with it instead of hanging.

The near-infrared goes deeper, to the fat a cannula can't get to, and tells those cells to let go of what they're holding.

You wrap it on, sit down for 20 minutes and watch something, then go for a 10 minute walk.

That's it.

The walk is what burns off what the light released.

The one downside is that it plugs in, so you'll want to sit near an outlet.

My sister does hers on the sofa after dinner.

And it isn't overnight. Give it 4 to 8 weeks, every day.

What happened to my sister

She texted me pretty much every night for the first few weeks.

Week 1: "Didn't pop out this afternoon. Pretty weird."

That was the swelling going down first.

Week 2: "Wore actual jeans to work and they didn't feel crazy tight. Survived the whole day."

Week 3, she sent me the photo at the top of this page.

She was in jeans she hadn't been able to do up since she was 48, and underneath she'd written 5 words: "I feel like me again."

By week 8 she was down 3.5 inches at the waist.

She never had the surgery.

"My $40 one from Amazon did nothing"

"I'd already tried a cheap red light belt and decided the whole thing was a scam. This one is nothing like it. You can see the difference in how many lights there are the second you switch it on. By week 3 my leggings weren't rolling down in the afternoon anymore."

"I'd already paid the deposit for lipo"

"My consultation was booked for October. A friend sent me this article and I pushed the appointment back a month to try it first. I cancelled it last week. I'll put the deposit toward a holiday."

"I bought it to prove my sister-in-law wrong"

"I'm 58, 6 years past menopause, and I've tried everything. Keto, a trainer, HRT, the lot. I only ordered this because it had the 60 days. Week 5 I measured and I was 2 inches down. I haven't told my sister-in-law yet."

What happens after you order

Today: you order, and it ships within 3 days.

Night 1: wrap it on, 20 minutes on the sofa, then a 10 minute walk. Measure your waist before you start and write the number down.

Week 1: most women notice the afternoon swelling first. Your stomach doesn't push out by 4 o'clock the way it did.

Weeks 2 to 4: your waistband stops cutting in.

Weeks 4 to 8: the tape measure starts to move. Measure the same spot at the same time every 2 weeks.

Day 60: if that number hasn't moved, email us and you get every dollar back.

I'd rather you trust your own tape measure than anything I've written here.

3 months from now

You order the new top online, it fits, and you keep it.

You buy jeans without thinking about the waistband. You sit down and nothing folds over it. You wear what you actually wanted to wear to the wedding, not whatever covers your middle.

And at 4 in the afternoon, you're the same shape you were when you got up.

Last week my sister sent me a photo from a changing room. A fitted top, tucked in. Underneath it: "Keeping this one :)"

What it costs, and what you'd spend otherwise

This isn't a $40 belt off Amazon. It's the same 2 lights clinics charge $150 to $250 a session for, with 450 chips wrapped round your whole middle.

The fair comparison is what women are already spending on this:

Option What it costs What happens after
Liposuction $6,000+, and 6 weeks off your feet The belly often comes back
CoolSculpting $4,000+ Only reaches the fat you can pinch
Weight-loss shots $400+ a month The belly is often the last thing to change
Clinic red light sessions $150 to $250 each Stops working when you stop going
LumaLeanWhat I gave my sister One payment, less than a single month of shots Yours to keep, used at home every night

What you get

LumaLean is $149.95 right now, 53% off the usual $319. That includes:

  • The LumaLean belt, with 450 chips and both lights in every LED
  • A free extension strap, so it fits 25 to 55 inches ($16 value)
  • The free Sculpt 30 program ($29.95 value)
  • A one-year warranty
  • Free shipping

Or you can keep going the way you are

You can keep sending tops back and buying everything with an elastic waist. You can book the consultation.

I'm not here to talk you out of taking care of yourself. If you're seriously thinking about surgery, I'm just asking you to try the one thing that reaches what the cannula can't first, before the cost, the recovery and the risk.

Questions I get asked

I thought you couldn't spot-reduce fat?
Not with exercise, because exercise burns fuel from your whole body. Light is different. It works on whatever it's shining on, which is why the studies measured the areas they treated.

I'm on HRT. Will this still help?
Yes. HRT often helps sleep and hot flashes, but a lot of women tell me it did nothing for their stomach. Nothing here interacts with what you take.

I'm on a weight-loss shot. Can I use both?
Yes. Plenty of women lose weight on the shots and find their stomach is the last thing to change. This works on the belly directly.

Does it get hot?
No. You'll feel a gentle warmth, but there's no heating element, so nothing can burn you.

Is it the same as the belts on Amazon?
Most of those have one type of light, not enough lights, or a flat pad. Those are the three reasons a red light belt doesn't work.

What if it doesn't work for me?
Email them within 60 days and they'll refund you.

Has anyone actually tried this? My doctor keeps telling me to just eat less and move more and I'm SO over it.

YES. I promise you it works. Give it 2-3 weeks. The bloating went down first, then the waistband, then everything else. Haven't thought about lipo since.

Mary I was skeptical too. Ordered it 6 weeks ago. The belly that would NOT budge is finally going down. My husband thinks I'm a different person 😄

Susan yes! I was on HRT for 2 years. I use this right alongside it, didn't change anything else. The belly is the only thing that finally responded. Best decision I ever made.
